Gilbert Van Zandt ( b. 12/20/1851 d. 10/4/1944) was one of the Youngest Ohioans to serve in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He spent his youth growing up in Port William. In July of 1861 at the age of 10 years 7 months and 16 days Van Zandt enlisted in the Company D 79th Ohio Volunteer Infantry with his father and uncles serving as a drummer boy and later as a courier wearing a uniform designed by his mother. At his time of Death (92 years old) Van Zandt was one of the last surviving Civil War Veterans.
